STORAG ETZEL GmbH laid the foundation for a citizen information center in May 2010 by setting up a citizen telephone line and an Internet portal. The head of the Etzel cavern information center is Marcel Sodmann.
The information center gives people the opportunity to get an idea of the plans and work being done on site. Interested parties can address questions and suggestions directly to contact persons on site. This makes it possible to provide objective and detailed information.
In December 2010, the Info Center was expanded by the Infobox at the Etzel energy storage facility. Here you will find impressive exhibits, informative posters as well as films and animations on the history of the site and the technical aspects of cavern construction.
The construction of the information center coincided with the planned expansion of the cavern facility at Etzel. A total of 75 caverns are currently in operation at the Etzel site (51 for gas, 24 for oil) with a geometric cavity volume of around 46 million cubic meters (as of 2023).
STORAG ETZEL invested more than 800 million euros in the last expansion phase from 2006 to 2013. Few other private-sector investors make a similarly positive economic contribution in the northwest, as a significant portion of the investment remains in the region and Lower Saxony.
Tenants of the caverns include well-known companies in the energy sector and state oil stockholding organizations.
Infobox has established itself in the region
STORAG ETZEL is pleased with the positive response so far since the opening of the Infobox premises. By the end of 2023, more than 17,000 visitors had been welcomed to the Infobox - including many Friedeburg citizens, residents and visitors from the region. School classes have also already taken advantage of the offer.
The cavern info center regularly participates in nationwide events such as the annual "Logistics Day" in April or the Lower Saxony "Future Day" for career orientation of young people.

In the information box at the STORAG ETZEL site, the topic of "caverns" is vividly conveyed through diagrams, models, films and typical exhibits, such as salt drill cores and 3D models of caverns as well as the Etzel salt dome.
The cavern information center serves as a starting point for getting to know the Etzel site. At the same time, lectures for visitor groups are offered there. Interested parties can address questions and suggestions directly to contact persons on site. The information center provides the opportunity to get a picture of the plans and work on site.
The Infobox is visited by a wide variety of groups and people of all ages. These include private groups of friends, school classes, rural folk associations, church groups, clubs, representatives of administrations and politics as well as members of service clubs.
The program is individually coordinated whenever possible. Especially in spring and summer, numerous vacationers come to the municipality of Friedeburg and to Etzel, many of them by bicycle. Numerous trade visitors also regularly find their way to the cavern information center in Etzel to learn about the cavern storage facility.
The Infobox of the Etzel Cavern Information Center is suitable for groups with a maximum of 30 participants. The multimedia demonstrations and explanations by the staff last about 45 to 60 minutes.
Accompanied tours of the cavern site are also possible by arrangement (travel time about 30 minutes). A bus required for this purpose must be brought by the guests. Tours are of course also possible by bicycle.
Registration is required.
Special guided tours and lectures for school classes are also part of the cavern information center's offer. The program schedule can, of course, be discussed and agreed individually with regard to educational aspects and topics (e.g. topics such as "salt", energy storage, job profiles at the site...).
The Etzel Cavern Info Center is barrier-free and can be visited by wheelchair users without any problems. However, the toilets in the Infobox itself are not accessible for all types of wheelchairs. Please inquire about this with the Infobox team before visiting.
The Etzel Cavern Information Center and STORAG ETZEL GmbH regularly participate in series of events such as the annual "Logistics Day" or the Lower Saxony "Future Day".
STORAG ETZEL has been participating in the nationwide "Day of Logistics" of the German Logistics Association (BVL) for quite some time. The next Logistics Day takes place on April 18, 2024!
