STORAG ETZEL's statement on the FNB's application for the hydrogen core network

Wasserstoff

STORAG ETZEL expressly welcomes the application by the FNB (association of the supra-regional gas transmission companies) to establish a hydrogen core network in accordance with Section 28q of the Energy Industry Act. As a storage operator, STORAG ETZEL is in favour of this initiative and sees it as a decisive step for the future of energy supply.

The rapid ramp-up of the hydrogen infrastructure is of central importance. The often-discussed chicken-and-egg problem, which concerns the parallel development of production and utilisation capacities, has thus been solved. This is the right way to ensure a sustainable and future-proof energy supply.

Our hydrogen storage research project H2CAST, which we are conducting with GASUNIE and others, fits in perfectly with the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy and the simultaneous integration of the Etzel cavern site. This will ensure a seamless transition for a hydrogen ramp-up. The planned core network is essential for the entire north-west region and in particular for the EnergyHub Wilhelmshaven and Germany. The hyperlink project in the Wilhelmshaven region and the connection to the core network can significantly accelerate the hydrogen ramp-up. The following pipeline connections are planned directly or indirectly for the Etzel site with the FNB's core grid application:

Pipeline project / From → To Company Commissioning (planned)
Pipeline project / From → To Wilhelmshaven-Wardenburg Company Gasunie Deutschland Commissioning (planned) 2027
Pipeline project / From → To Wilhelmshaven-Dykhausen Company OGE/GASCADE Commissioning (planned) 2027
Pipeline project / From → To AQD Schillig-Dykhausen Company AquaDuctus Pipeline GmbH Commissioning (planned) 2030
Pipeline project / From → To Dykhausen-Bunde Company AquaDuctus Pipeline GmbH Commissioning (planned) 2030

Central hub for the hydrogen economy

With the implementation, the region will become a central hub for the hydrogen economy in Germany and Europe. This will not only bring local economic benefits, but will also strengthen Germany's position in the global competition for sustainable energy solutions.

We are convinced that the realisation of the hydrogen core network is a decisive step towards a climate-friendly and secure energy future and look forward to working together with all stakeholders involved.

STORAG ETZEL is one of the largest independent storage companies in Europe and offers sustainable storage solutions for the future. The tenants of our caverns are well-known European and international energy companies. In addition to the existing oil and gas caverns, we are also researching the conversion and rededication of our existing oil and gas caverns to hydrogen - the energy source of the future - in the H2CAST Etzel research and pilot project together with GASUNIE. We are making the site and our Etzel cavern facility "H2-ready" and creating security of supply for renewable energy.
